ECG cuts power supply to Atwima Kwawoma District Assembly

Official business at the Atwima Kwawoma District Assembly has come to a halt due to power cut for non-payment of bills.

The Electricity Company of Ghana disconnected supply last week to demand payment of over seven thousand Ghana cedis (Ghc 7,000) outstanding debt.

Nhyira Fm’s Kofi Asante visited the assembly and reports the situation has rendered workers redundant as they idle about on the premises.

Atwima Kwawoma District is one of the young districts created by the NPP Administration in 2007.

It has since been grappling with infrastructural and other challenges, after a long battle over the location of the capital ended.

The latest development has brought productivity to almost zero as all administrative activities have come to a standstill.

Some assembly members in the district are blaming the Chief Executive Officer, Tony Nyame for mismanaging the assembly.

The Assembly man for Aburaso Electoral Area, Joseph Asamoah says Mr. Nyame has not been reporting to the office to perform his official duties since the demise of the late President Mills.

But Mr. Nyame in an interview with Nhyira News refuses to be drawn into an argument with the members on what he describes as an “unfortunate situation”.

He however says immediate steps are in place to restore power supply.

Some of them describe the development as “embarrassing”.

Ashanti Regional Manager of the Passport Application Centre, Peprah Ampratwum, will neither deny nor confirm the unavailability of electricity pre-paid credit, though he admitted there were some technical challenges.

Asokore Mampong Affordable Housing Site houses criminals. 16-07-12

It is now clear the abandoned Affordable Housing Project site at Asokore Mampong has completely been taken over by squatters, creating a hide-out for criminals and other notorious gangs.

The projects involves construction of 800 flats of 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms on 50 acres of land was initiated by the erstwhile Kufuor administration.

Like other locations in other parts of the country, the project was discontinued following a change in government.
Nhyira FM’s Kofi Asante visited the Asokore-Mampong site after residents of Adukrom, also in Kumasi, complained members of a gang which attacked them last Saturday live there.

Residents of Aboabo, Sepe-Timpong, Manguase, Asokore Mampong and its surroundings for some time now have been leaving a state of fears following what they describes as “sporadic” attacks by some notorious gangs who are now using the abandoned affordable housing as their hideout. Police am told last month was here for some swoop but they missed their target due to their time of visit.

The facility, which is engulfed in bushy surroundings, is now a safe haven for over 1,000 squatters, mostly traders who were displaced from the Kumasi Race course recently.
My intrractions with some people l met reveals the squatters have allotted to themselves the responsibility of caring for the abandoned housing units, and that each block has a caretaker, who takes some form of rent from them.

Residents in the neighbourhood complained that criminals, including wee smokers and armed robbers, had taken advantage of the vulnerability of the squatters, mainly women and children, and unleash inhuman treatment on them.

The helpless women are constantly subjected to rape and molestations.
Meanwhile, a four unit block and two other rooms are now serving as classrooms for a local Islamic School (Makaranta)

POLICE PERSONNEL GRUMBLE OVER RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR SEWING THEIR UNIFORMS, THEY DEMAND ANSWERS FROM IGP.22-03-12

Some police personnel in the Ashanti Region are fuming over the decision of their leadership to have them pay for sewing of their uniforms by civilian tailors and dressmakers.

The aggrieved officers say authorities have distributed the fabric for the uniform to be sewn by tailors of their choice.

They argue this is contrary to normal practice for which they are demanding explanation from the Inspector-General of Police.

Nhyira News sources say the police personnel have been directed effective January this year, to discard the present uniforms for a new navy-blue outfit.
They are to sew them with embroidered name tags on the shirt, but not back and side pockets for the pair of trousers.

The personnel however complain they have to pay high charges by private entity to sew the uniforms when the service tailoring unit is still operational.
One of them spoke to Nhyira FM’s Kofi Asante described the situation as unfortunate.

Command officials will not speak on record, but say the move is meant to address frequent complaints about over- or under-size uniforms.

Meanwhile, Nhyira News visit to the regional tailoring shop reveals workers are under intense pressure to meet deadline of their colleagues.

Officials declined to speak to Nhyira News, but further checks indicate it takes two working days to complete a set of uniform, and they have to serve over   two thousand personnel in the region.

Tension brews at Bomso Sasa near Kumasi over a long standing land dispute

There is mounting tension at Bomso Sasa near Kumasi as factional tradition traditional leaders knock heads over a long standing dispute over land ownership.

The deployment of land guards by opposing forces is said to be heightening fears of a possible clash in the area.

Residents in the community say the situation is worsening by the day.
Chief of Buoho Sasa, Nana Akoto Osei has accused the Community head (or Odikro) of flouted directives by the District Security Council compelling both parties to stay off the land.

The chief also alleged a private developer known in the area as “Off Twum” has been engage in acts of terrorism and disturbing the peace of the area.
He wants the Odikro, Kofi Krah to be called to order to avert any possible reprisal attacks.

The Odikro, Kofi Krah has described the chief’s allegations as unwarranted. According to him, the Asantehene has setup a committee to look into the matter and will therefore not counter the chief.

Effigya-Kwabre District Chief Executive, Mr. Oppong-KyekyeKu says the DISEC have been meeting the two factions to finding lasting solution to what he describes as a “generational unresolved dispute”.

He hinted the Council will issue an official statement on the issue but assured residents of maximum security.

Deputy Information Minister Condemns calls for removal of Police Officers.

Deputy Information Minister, James Agyenim Boateng, has condemned attempts by the NPP and NDC to cause disaffection for some police officers.

The opposition party wants the Inspector- General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye, out as the Greater Accra Region branch of the ruling party calls MTTU Commander, ACP Angwubutoge Awuni’s head.

The two are being accused of bias and unprofessional conduct in the on-going biometric registration.

However, Mr. Agyenim Boateng says the persistent attack and threats to security personnel has serious implication for national cohesion, especially, in the run-up to the December elections.

He says the posture of two parties are not healthy for the country’s infant democracy.
Mr. Agyenim Boateng was contributing to a discussion on Nhyira FM’s Saturday morning talk show, ‘Kukurantumi’ hosted by Kofi Asante Ennin in Kumasi.

He however urges security officers to uphold the code of conducts to win the trust of Ghanaians.

“I think that all these calls are not helpful, but police officers must not behave as politicians. If any police officer feels like being into politics the person must resign from his position and openly join politicians to be identified as such”    he stated.

The Deputy Information Minister believes the NDC has, at least, been absolved from opposition accusation of under-hand dealing between government and police.
